Representatives from SLAA and AFOM visited Sierra Leone over a period of 2 years to conduct feasibility study, and inspected the Masanga Hospital. Thanks to excellent cooperation from ADRA, the Sierra Leone Seventh Day Adventist Mission, the Government of Sierra Leone and local people in the Masanga area an excellent insight into the history of Masanga was gained; its actual status and the enormous possibilities of the hospital, the area and the people in it.
Good and useful relations were established with the regional health authorities represented by Dr. Wurie, District Medical Officer, and with the central health authorities. Meeting with H.E. Mrs. Abator Thomas, the Minister for Health and Mr. Ibrahim Sessay, The Deputy Health Minister and the staff of the Ministry, were constructive, informative and inspiring.
In collaboration with the Health Ministry architect Mr. Victor Milton, the buildings were inspected, and following this an economic estimate will be set up for the costs for each building. This proves to be a more extensive job than expected, and the final figures for the total restoration of the hospital.
GOSL/MOHS has in collaboration with SLAA had restored parts of the buildings through a government grant of 50 million Leones (17.000 USD) and a gift of $4800 US from SLAA, and this has made one administrative building and one out-patient-clinic and also parts of one in-patient section ready for use almost immediately. In addition to this, the hostel is almost completely restored, so that with relatively little effort temporary housing for the staff can be established here.
What remains for the Feasibility Planning phase is the further development of this project description, to form the basis for an agreement with MOHS.
On completion of this agreement application for funds for the start-up of the project will be made, and AFOM will apply for aid for the transport of container(s) with hospital equipment, and we will apply for X-ray and hospital equipment from “Ulandsværkstedet” in Randers and the other renovation workshops.
